5 Tips for Traveling with Chronic Pain

Dr. Naumit Bhandari at Trident Pain Management specializes in pain management, regardless of the origin of your symptoms. And when you’re on the right pain management plan, you’ve got the ideal foundation upon which to build your travel plans. Here are five more ways to keep the effects of chronic pain from dominating you the next time you need or want to travel.

1. Keep your meds close

Your primary supply of medications must always travel with you. If you’re separated from your checked bags, you’re stuck when your on-hand meds are gone. Count out the dosages you need for your entire travel period, and store these securely in your carry-on luggage. Pack backup medication in checked bags in case anything happens to your primary supply.

2. Don’t forget hydration

Many chronic pain sufferers know how dehydration can make them more sensitive to pain. Relying on water through in-flight service, though, is an invitation to disaster. Invest in a large, quality water bottle with a secure lid, and fill it after you’re through the Transport Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint. You’re assured a good supply of water when you need it, not only when the bar cart goes by.
3. Work your energy budget
Just as you watch the gas gauge of your car, monitoring your own energy levels through the rigors of travel can make the difference between simply arriving and getting to your destination feeling in control. There’s plenty you can do to ease the demands on your body. Reserve a wheelchair service when you book your ticket, even if you feel you can tough it out. The services are there to help you; they’re free save for the cost of tipping your attendant; and you don’t have the strain of walking to gates and, perhaps more importantly, standing in long lines. Security lines can be frustratingly slow, and prolonged standing can jumpstart some forms of pain.
5. Schedule rest and recovery
Whenever possible, build some downtime into the plan after each flight, both to and from your destination. Without the stress of a tight deadline, the aches and pains you feel even with your medication are easier to endure. Get to your hotel and plan an early, quiet night, and let sleep work its magic.
